How to write a blog post for DMVStream.com

Here is an example to a previous blog post.

STEP 1 – Email BJ Koubaroulis and your supervisor with blog ideas

Each Monday by 10 a.m., an email should be sent to BJ Koubaroulis and your supervisor with at least 2-3 blog ideas for that week. These should be more than just listing an athlete’s name for interview; you should have an idea of what the blog post is going to be about. Wait for your supervisor’s approval before reaching out to athletes or writing the story.

Here is a good example of a good story pitch:

Lake Braddock senior James Butler is arguably the area’s top public school big man, averaging over 25 ppg. Despite his production and size (6’8″), Butler is only ranked as a one-star recruit by ESPN, and is committed to play basketball at Navy where his father played. His older sister, Natalie, played at Lake Braddock and now plays at the University of Connecticut. I would like to do a 10-question Q&A with James about his lack of recruitment, why he chose Navy, and what it’s like growing up in a basketball family, transcribing the interview. The post will also include video highlights of James that Synthesis Multimedia has.

STEP 2 – Write the blog

  • Below is a video that outlines what makes a good blog.
  • Blog posts should be no longer than 700 words, barring a longer feature-type story.
  • Blog posts should include a minimum of three sources, and blogs should always include video, whether that video is from Synthesis Multimedia, or highlights from the athlete’s Hudl page.

STEP 3 – Email BJ Koubaroulis and your supervisor for approval

Send an email to BJ Koubaroulis and your supervisor that the draft of the blog post is ready for approval. Your supervisor will read through the blog, checking for errors and also content, making sure it is ready to publish. Your supervisor will reply back with either approval or feedback.

All blogs for the week should be written and published by 12 p.m. Saturday.

STEP 4 – Publish and tweet out the blog post.

Tweet out the blog post from the DMVStream Twitter account, tagging the athlete/school account, and any other relevant accounts. Below is an example of a blog post tweet.
