September 9, 2015, 7:55 p.m. — Oakton junior offensive lineman Pierce Banbury has been selected to the 2016 Under-18 U.S. National Team, which has been assembled by USA Football. The squad will compete in the seventh annual International Bowl against the Canadian national teams at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

USA Football assembles teams at the Under-14, Under-15, Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 levels each year. The U-18 team will compete on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

“I was definitely excited when I got the email that I had made the team,” Banbury said. “It was a surprise for me because I haven’t really thought of the USA teams because of my high school season, it was definitely great news.”

Recent alumni of the U.S. National teams include QB Jameis Winston, QB Bryce Petty, QB Kevin Hogan, RB Todd Gurley and RB Samaje Perine.

“It’s awesome that I’m able to play on the team that all those guys played,” Banbury said. “It makes it a lot more special that I’m in the same position as those players.”

The 6’3,” 255-pound Banbury helped his Oakton (1-0) quarterback Sal Tutone throw for 339 yards and two touchdowns in the Cougars 31-25 win over Madison this past weekend. The Cougars also rushed for 105 yards and two more scores.

The stage will be a little larger, however, when Banbury represents the red, white and blue in February.

“I’ve never been to the Cowboys stadium, just have seen it on TV,” Banbury said. “It’s an honor to play on the same field as the Dallas Cowboys.”

In just his junior year, Banbury has plenty of time before worrying about which NFL stadium he will play in next. First, he hopes to play at the college level, and says he has received interest from Dartmouth, Boston College, Purdue and Wake Forest thus far.

For now, he has nearly two full seasons left with Oakton to improve his stock and get ready for the next level. But he also hopes to achieve success as a team, a common trait among offensive lineman, a position typically removed from the spotlight.

“Our goal is to win the region championship and make a run to the state finals,” Banbury said.

Banbury and the Cougars host T.C. Williams this Friday.
