February 27th, 2016, 12:00 p.m. –High school basketball is just getting started here in the Washington, D.C. region. Week 12 saw a slew of fantastic plays, including great passes, big dunks and game-winners.
Here are the Top plays from the weekend:
No. 10: West Potomac sophomore guard Daryl Mackey Jr. steals the ball and throws down a two-handed slam dunk in the third quarter of the Wolverines’ 56-53 loss to Madison.
No. 9: Cavs guard, Jomaite Tavares shoots himself out of a cannon and posterizes a Northwest defender in Kennedy’s 73-58 win.
No. 8: Midway through the 4th, Vikings guard Jordan Miller goes the length of the court and throws down the ferocious two-handed jam as Loudoun Valley went on to beat William Fleming 74-57.
No. 7: Wise senior guard Michael Speight used his quickness to shake the defender and score the basket late in the third. This was one of many great plays by the Pumas to help them beat Doulgass 69-57.
No. 6: Wilson junior guard Ayinde Hikim passes the ball to junior guard Ricardo Lindo who dribbles past a defender to throw down a monster dunk in the fourth quarter of the Tigers’ 57-38 win over Theodore Roosevelt to win the DICAA championship.
No. 5: Late in the 4th with Hayfield down 3, guard Langston Gaither pulls up, drills the three-pointer while getting fouled and then looks at the crowd and says he’s got ice water in his veins! Despite the clutch shot Hayfield lost to Lake Braddock 97-95.
No. 4: With the game tied early in the 4th, Saxons guard Olivia Augustini finds Elizabeth Bucy who gets the basket and the foul! That play gave Langley the momentum as they took down Battlefield 45-41.
No. 3: With a few seconds left in the third, Warhawks guard Johnny Corish knocks down the three pointer from one step inside the volleyball line to give Madison the the six point lead! The Warhawks would hang on to beat W.T. Woodson and win the North 62-58 and Corish was named Tournament MVP.
No. 2: With Stonewall Jackson down 1 and time running out, Jordan Gibson gets to the wing and nails the pull up jumper to give the Raiders the victory and stun Chantilly 50-49.
No. 1: With the game tied at 77, the Hornets attack the rim and crash the glass, getting up 4 shots before Joel Varone finally gets the putback at the buzzer to give Herndon the 79-77 upset win over Lake Braddock and a birth in the State Tournament!
