January 23rd, 2016, 12:00 p.m. –High school basketball is just getting started here in the Washington, D.C. region. Week 7 saw a slew of fantastic plays, including great passes, big dunks and game-winners.
Here are the Top plays from the weekend:
No. 10: Jaguars guard DeMarcus Demonia receives the pass from Glenn Ford and throws down a monster dunk over the defender in the first quarter of the Jaguars’ 63-59 loss to Bowie.
No. 9: Champe guard Dom Fragala delivers the sweet no-look assist for the easy bucket. Fragala would score 36 to the lead the Knights to the 79-55 win over the Falacons.
No. 8: St. Andrew’s forward Anthony Duruji gets the ball on the outlet pass, drives on the baseline and cocks back for the one-handed jam, posterizing his defender. The Lions went on to defeat Grace Christian Academy 99-49.
No. 7: Dominion guard Mike Elliott catches fire in this one, scoring 21 points, including 4 threes, in a 6-minute span. The senior finished with 34 points to lead the Titans to the 91-82 win over the Champe.
No. 6: With Centreville trailing by 1, Bryce Douglas drives from halfcourt past his defender, into the paint, and goes up against two more defenders getting the floater to bounce in with 14 seconds left to give the Wildcats the 46-45 lead as they would hang on to win, stopping Robinson’s 10-game win streak.
No. 5: With the game tied at 66, Paul VI guard Aaron Thompson brings the ball up the floor, drives to the basket, and gets fouled with 1.2 seconds left. Thompson calmly sinks the ensuing foul shot and O’Connell fails to get a shot off as the Panthers beat their rivals 67-66.
No. 4: With the game tied at 43 and South Lakes holding on for the last shot, Seahawks guard Damon Johnson drives into the paint, attacks the heart of the defense and banks in the layup with 5 seconds giving the Seahawks the 45-43 lead, a lead they would hang on to in the win over the Saxons.
No. 3: With Hayfield down 2 in overtime, Langston Gaither throws up a prayer and Cameron Wilkerson answers it by tipping the ball in as time expires forcing double OT! Then in double overtime Brian Cobbs drains the stepback 3 with 8 seconds left to give the Hawks the thrilling 82-80 victory over the Seahawks.
No. 2: Wolverines guard Daryl Mackey Jr drives to the baseline and rises up, bringing down the hammer over four, that’s right, four defenders for the poster! Quite the dunk for the sophomore in the Wolverines 63-46 win over Annandale.
No. 1: With Freedom South Riding trailing Kettle Run by 4, Eagles big man Hunter Oakford drains the three pointer with 20 seconds left to pull within 1. On the ensuing possession, the Eagles steal the ball from the Cougars and call a timeout with 8 seconds left. Oakford gets open on the inbounds play and gets the ball, laying it in off the glass for the game winner with 3.8 seconds left to give the Eagles the 57-56 win.
