March 2, 2016, 8:00 p.m. — Next weekend the Washington Inner City Lacrosse Foundation (WINNERS Lacrosse) will host one of the largest High School lacrosse events in the area.
The 8th Annual D.C. Lacrosse Classic will be hosted on March 12th featuring eight boys teams and six girls teams. Both sides represent some of the best teams in the district, setting up a strong preseason event that is intended to celebrate the sport of lacrosse. The event hopes to bring fans of all ages who love the sport of lacrosse together.
“The sport has come so far in the last number of years,” Executive Director Matt Breslin said. “We wanted to get all of the high school teams from D.C. playing together on the same day at the same location.”
The boys games will all be hosted at St. Alban’s School and feature the following schools: Maret, Woodrow Wilson, Sidwell Friends, St. John’s, Gonzaga, St. Albans, KIPP D.C., and School Without Walls. The games will start at 9:00am and run until roughly 5:00pm.
The girls side features teams from Sidwell Friends, Maret, Georgetown Visitation, St. John’s, School Without Walls, and Wilson. All of these game will be at Woodrow Wilson High School running from 10:00am-4:00pm. This is the second year that there has been a girls event.
“We are more than honored to be a part of this tradition of DC Lacrosse. Celebrating lacrosse in the actual city and celebrating each step our city takes to grow the sport and love of the game,” Gonzaga Head Coach Casey O’Neill said. “Today, we thank Matt Breslin of Winners Lacrosse and his team for making the DC Lacrosse Classic so special.”
WINNERS Lacrosse is a nonprofit organization started in 2000, formed to help children from underserved neighborhoods get introduced to the sport of lacrosse. The organization provides children with camps, teams, and equipment while instilling values and skills beneficial on-and-off the field.
In 2014, the organization helped start a middle school lacrosse league in the district that currently has over 300 boys and girls involved. Many of these students will go on to play in this event as they move into high school.
This year, WINNERS Lacrosse has partnered with Play4TheCure for the D.C. Lacrosse Classic. All proceeds from the event will benefit both organizations. Admission for the event is $5 for adults and free for children.
