September 22, 2015, 5:20 p.m. — Westfield senior Tyler Scanlon has excelled both on the basketball court and on the football field, but he will pursue a basketball career as he has committed to Boston University for hoops. He made the announcement via Twitter last Thursday, as first reported by Brandon Parker of the Washington Post.

Scanlon’s other suitors included American, George Mason and William & Mary.

His basketball stock has been on a steady rise over his three-year prep career. He spent his first two years with Paul VI before transferring to Westfield prior to his junior year, a transfer that paid major dividends. He led the Bulldogs to a 27-2 record, the best in school history, and the squad reached the Virginia 6A state championship game.

The 6-foot-7 swingman earned third-team All-Met honors last year as he averaged 17.6 points per game, due to his ability to play both inside and out for the Bulldogs. He is also a member of AAU’s Team Takeover, which drew more attention to his game over the summer. He will have one season left with the Bulldogs to hone his skills before joining the Terriers roster.

In the meantime, Scanlon is quarterbacking the Bulldogs football team, a squad ranked 6th in the current Washington Post All-Met poll. They have a big game this Friday against another local powerhouse, Stone Bridge.
