August 31, 2015, 3:28 p.m. — High school football is officially underway in the Washington, D.C. metro region. Week 1 saw a slew of fantastic plays, including heaves downfield for six, impressive individual performances and dramatic game winners.

Prior to counting down the Top 10, Koubaroulis opens the show with the “best of the rest,” which is the honorable mention section of the segment. Though these particular plays may not have cracked the Top 10, the four plays aired here are special in their own right. In this section you will see long touchdown passes from Freedom and Spalding High Schools, as well as a crafty interception from Battlefield High School and a pick six from Maryland recruit Keandre Jones of Good Counsel.

But, without further ado, it is time for the Top 10 plays of Week 1.

No. 10: Ballou freshman running back Jamal Speaks had a breakout performance at Eastern with 163 yards and three scores in his first high school game on just 13 carries, as the Knights went on to win big, 38-18.

No. 9: Loudoun Valley senior Trey McDyre fielded a kick-off on the bounce and took it 89 yards untouched for six, one of his four touchdowns in the game. The Vikings went on to defeat Kettle Run by a wide margin, 33-6.

No. 8: Staying in Virginia, Park View senior quarterback Chase Jefferson ran the ball for two long scores against Manassas Park, 67 and 72 yards respectively, as the Patriots would go on to win in a close one, 26-21.

No. 7: Returning to the Ballou-Eastern contest in Washington, D.C., the Ramblers junior quarterback Jarome Johnson scrambled for a 38-yard touchdown run, and would finish the game with an impressive 184 yards rushing in the losing effort.

No. 6: DeMatha and Miami Central met in a matchup between two national powers at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex that was featured on ESPN. The Stags proved to be too much as sophomore lineman Austin Fontaine blocks the kick and Maryland recruit Tino Ellis takes it 85 yards the other way for six in the 38-14 victory over the No. 2 team in the nation. DeMatha proved why they are ranked No. 1 in the D.C. region.

No. 5: Staying in Maryland, McNamara All-Met quarterback Ramar Williams threw the ball up in the air and wide receiver Charles Kelly made the acrobatic catch in the end zone, as the Mustangs would go on to defeat No. 15 Riverdale Baptist by a big margin, 48-22.

No. 4: Returning to Loudoun County, Heritage junior quarterback Alex Carlin went crazy against James Wood, going 8-of-13 for 330 yards and five touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown, as the Pride went on to win easily, 55-21.

No. 3: Keeping it in Loudoun, No. 18 Tuscarora senior quarterback Daniel Smith had an impressive evening against rival No. 19 Briar Woods, as he threw for a deep touchdown in the first half to wide receiver Bryce Sorrell and ran for two more scores, including the game-winner with two minutes remaining in the 22-16 victory.

No. 2: Once again staying in Loudoun, Champe junior quarterback Zach Burdick ran for the game-winning touchdown as he dove for the pylon against Woodgrove in overtime after the Wolverines registered a field goal, putting the Knights ahead 20-17 in dramatic fashion.

No. 1: Rock Ridge and Riverside met in a battle between two first year teams in Loudoun County. The game was an instant classic as it went to overtime. In the extra frame, Phoenix junior Eric Vivian ran for a lengthy touchdown to get within one point, and then got the call again as he ran for the two-point conversion. He finished the game with over 300 all-purpose yards and all four touchdowns as Rock Ridge beat Riverside, 29-28.

Week 1 did not disappoint, check back in next week to see what Week 2 has in store.
